FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Sophomore pitcher Krista Lewis joined the ranks of the elite in CNU softball history on Wednesday afternoon, as she became just the fifth player in program history to toss a perfect game. In game two of a doubleheader sweep at Mary Washington, Lewis retired all 21 batters she faced for just the seventh perfect game in the 30-year history of Christopher Newport softball. Lewis' second no-hitter of the year assured CNU (28-6, 9-1) a sweep of the Eagles (11-10, 4-4) as the Captains won 7-2 in game one and 7-0 in the second game.

The sophomore right-hander joins Donna Cerami, Michelle Kass-Prewitt and Elizabeth Holte as the only players with seven-inning perfect games, while Vanessa Gray added a pair of five-inning perfect games in her career. It is the first for CNU since March 17, 2010, and only the third perfect game in the last ten years. In the win, Lewis used her defense, retiring nine batters on the ground, nine in the air and three via strikeout.

The Captains offense would not let her down, scoring three runs in the first and adding one more in the second-, third-, fourth- and seventh-innings, to run away with a 7-0 shutout win over the Eagles. The three-run first was ignited by an RBI triple from Kristina McLaughlin, followed by a sacrifice fly from Kelsey Lewis. With two outs and the bases cleared, senior Taylor Dillow stepped in and blasted a solo home run to cap off the big opening frame.

Lewis worked quickly through the first, inducing three ground ball outs, and the Captains went right back to work in the second. Candice Zollars scored the inning's only run on an RBI single from McLaughlin, but seven batters came to the plate as the Captains left the bases loaded. Sophomores Meagan Jones and Tori Clarke would add RBI's later in the game, but the story was clearly the CNU pitcher, working quickly through the Mary Washington lineup in every inning.

She improved to 15-2 on the season, lowering her ERA to 1.64 with her tenth complete game of the year.

In game one, rookie Makayla Jenkins also pitched well, allowing just two runs, one earned, on four hits in a complete game victory. Jenkins improved to 4-1 on the season after striking out a pair. The first game was tied at two runs apiece heading into the final inning, but the Captains exploded for a five-run seventh to pull away for the game one win.

With the score knotted at two, Zollars reached on an error by the pitcher with one out in the seventh. An infield single by Jones, followed by a stolen base, put two runners in scoring position with only one out. McLaughlin walked, loading the bases for pinch hitter Kelsey Lewis. She lined a single into center field, driving in the eventual game-winning run, but the Captains were not finished. Dillow cleared the bases with a three-RBI shot to the outfield, and the senior would come around to score on an RBI double from rookie Jenna Sprinkle

Jenkins went back out for the bottom of the seventh and retired the side with a ground out and a double play, closing out the victory.

In the two-game set, Jones led the offense with five hits in six at-bats, scoring four times and driving in a run. Dillow added a four-hit performance, including a home run, while reigning CAC Player of the Week Candice Zollars added three hits in the doubleheader.

CNU will close out the regular season this weekend, hosting Wesley College in a CAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 12, followed by a non-conference finale with Chowan College on Sunday, April 13.
