Logan Eldridge and
Brook Byrd, the Christopher Newport University women's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 victory over Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday. The Captains improve to 7-10 overall, 3-1 in the Capital Athletic Conference, while the Lions fall to 3-11, 0-3.
Eldridge and Byrd cruised through the day without suffering a single loss, winning every game that they played. The CAC match started at 1:00 pm on the CNU Tennis Courts, getting started with three quick wins in doubles play.
Eldridge paired with sophomore
Jackie Gaine to take down Hillary Mataure and Alejandra Portillo, 8-0, at No. 2; while Byrd played with senior
Kelsey Clark for the seamless 8-0 win at No. 3 over Morgan Acker and Fay Ansary.
The No. 1 tandem of
Katie Carlson and
Jodi Noland suffered just one loss en route to a tidy 8-1 victory over Theodora Avramidis and Stephanie Harnden.
Heading into singles play with a comfortable 3-0 lead, Eldridge and Byrd led a dominant effort in singles play. Their perfect 6-0, 6-0 victories were joined by Carlson, who also had a clean win in singles. Byrd dropped Ansary at No. 6, while Eldridge and Carlson cruised to the wins at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
The Captains will return to action on Sunday, April 6, as they host Salisbury University to wrap up the home portion of the 2014 schedule. CNU will host the Sea Gulls on Senior Day, with match time set for Noon.
