CNU Men's Tennis Hosts #3 Salisbury in CAC Semifinal Wednesday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The second-seeded Christopher Newport men's tennis team will play host to the third-seeded Salisbury University Sea Gulls (12-4) on Wednesday afternoon, in the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals. After both teams earned a first-round bye with a top three finish in the regular season standings, the two regionally-ranked programs will go head-to-head for a shot to play in the 2014 CAC Championship match. The match is set to begin at 3:00 pm as the 14-7 Captains put their 12-match home winning streak against Division III opponents on the line.

The two teams matched up just over two weeks ago on April 6, with CNU capturing a key 7-2 win over the Sea Gulls, earning CNU the right to host the CAC Semifinal matchup. Salisbury leads the all-time series, 19-8, but CNU has won four straight dating back to 2010.

The other CAC Semifinal will also be played on Wednesday, as top-seeded Mary Washington will entertain St. Mary's College (Md.) at 6:00 pm. The championship will be played this weekend, hosted by the highest seed remaining on either Saturday or Sunday, depending on the participants.

Christopher Newport, ranked No. 9 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic South regional rankings, have won five straight matches to close out the regular season. Salisbury, ranked No. 19, features one of the top ten doubles tandems in the region, in Daniel Albers and Eric Spangler, ranked eighth. The Captains also boast a regionally-ranked pairing, as Steven Boslet and Sam Thomson have led the way for CNU. When the four players faced off in the regular season, the Salisbury pair took an 8-5 decision for the win.

The Captains lineup has been led by the aforementioned rookies, as Boslet has a team-high 16 wins, primarily at the No. 2 singles position, and Thomson has added 14 victories, with and impressive 6-1 mark in the No. 3 position. Sophomore Chiraag Shetty has played well down the stretch and senior Joey Manilla, who ranks tenth all-time in doubles victories, has gone 7-1 when paired with Shetty in duals.

The match is set to begin at 2:30 pm. A full recap and statistics will be available at CNUsports.com following the action.
