Captains Host CAC Women's Tennis Semifinal Versus #3 Salisbury Tuesday at 2:30 pm

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Making their first ever appearance in the Capital Athletic Conference postseason, the second-seeded Christopher Newport Captains (10-10) will host third-seeded Salisbury University (11-7) in the conference tournament semifinals on Tuesday, April 22 at 2:30 pm. The Captains dropped Salisbury, 7-2, in the regular season and both teams are ranked in the Atlantic South ITA Regional Rankings.

On April 6, the two teams met up on the CNU Courts for the regular season matchup. For the first time since 1990, the Captains defeated the Sea Gulls, snapping a nine-match winning streak against CNU for Salisbury. The all-time series favors the Sea Gulls, 9-6, dating back to 1980.

The other semifinal matchup will be hosted by top-seeded Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon, as the Eagles host St. Mary's College (Md.). The two winning teams will advance to play in the CAC Championship Match on either Saturday or Sunday.

The Captains, ranked No. 13 in the region, have won five straight matches to cruise into the postseason with momentum. Salisbury, ranked No. 14 in the region, sandwiched back-to-back losses to Mary Washington and CNU with seven wins to end the year. The Sea Gulls feature one of the top singles players in the conference, in Natalie Savage. The sophomore is 12-5 at the No. 1 singles position and has won all six of her matches against CAC foes.

Youth leads the CNU lineup, as rookies Katie Carlson and Logan Eldridge have been the top players for the Captains all spring. Carlson has a team-high 16 singles wins and is regionally-ranked in doubles with senior Jodi Noland. Eldridge has 13 singles wins with seven coming at the No. 2 position.

The match is set to begin at 2:30 pm. A full recap and statistics will be available at CNUsports.com following the action.
