Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The 2014 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament got underway Thursday on a sunny, brisk, and windy day at Captains Park. Christopher Newport, the top seed in the five-team field, defeated fifth-seeded York College, 8-0, in a game shortened to six innings due to the eight-run rule.
CNU's victory sets the stage for a Friday morning meeting with the top team in the nation, Salisbury. The second-seeded Sea Gulls defeated Frostburg State, 10-3, on Thursday. The Captains and Sea Gulls split their regular-season doubleheader on March 22nd at Captains Park, the lone loss of the season for Salisbury (32-1). Friday's first pitch is set for 10 a.m. at Captains Park.

Krista Lewis. Jones, who was named the CAC's Player of the Week this week, went four-for-four with two singles, a double, and her first career home run. Jones ended the game with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to post the 8-0 victory. Jones scored three runs and also drove in three.
Lewis pitched six strong innings to earn her 18th win of the season against just two defeats. The redshirt freshman allowed just two hits and lowered her season ERA to 1.60 with the shutout effort.
Christopher Newport jumped to an early lead by plating three runs in the first inning and followed with two more in the second. Jones smacked her home run in the fifth, and then closed out the game with the two-run single in the sixth.
The Captains, ranked 13th in the country this week, registered 12 hits against York pitching en route to the triumoh. CNU is now 33-6 for the year.
York, who had beaten fourth-seeded Mary Washington earlier in the day by a 5-3 score, falls to 13-21 with the defeat. Starter Jennifer Taff, who picked up the win against the Eagles, allowed six runs in four and two-thirds innings to take the loss against the Captains. She is now 10-14 for the year.
The double-elimination tournament will feature three games on Friday with the CNU-Salisbury game kicking things off at 10 a.m. York will play Frostburg State at 12 noon in an elimination game...and then the loser of the CNU-Salisbury game will play the winner of the York-Frostburg State game at 2 p.m. in another elimination game at Captains Park.
The five-team field was cut to four late Thursday afternoon when Frostburg State knocked out Mary Washington by a 3-2 score for the second loss of the day for the Eagles. After two more teams are ousted on Friday the Championship will be set for Saturday at 10 a.m. at Captains Park.
