VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Dropping just eight games combined in doubles and singles action, the Christopher Newport University women's tennis team blasted Virginia Wesleyan College (4-15) in the regular season finale on Sunday afternoon, 9-0. The Captains clawed their way back to .500 with a 10-10 mark overall with the win. 

Rookie Katie Carlson made her first career start at the No. 1 position, and earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Mia Proctor for CNU. The 4-5-6 starters for CNU did not surrender a game, sweeping all three opponents 6-0, 6-0. Senior Kelsey Clark and rookies Brook Byrd and Anna Chekalkina earned the wins in order. 

In doubles action, Carlson paired with senior Jodi Noland for an 8-2 victory over Proctor and Marisa Cifuentes at the No. 1 position, while CNU swept doubles play surrendering just four games. Carlson and Noland are the 15th-ranked doubles tandem in the Atlantic South region, marking the highest ever ranking for a CNU women's pairing and the first since 2006. Byrd and Chekalkina combined for an 8-0 win at No. 3, while Clark and sophomore Jackie Gaine earned an 8-2 win at No. 2. 

CNU will now look ahead to the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament, where they have earned a first-round bye and will play in the conference semifinals on April 23.
