MARY'S CITY, Md. -- In the final Capital Athletic Conference matchup of the regular season, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 victory at St. Mary's College (Md.). The Captains improved to 9-10 overall, 5-1 in the CAC, to secure the number two seed in next week's CAC Tournament.
The Seahawks fell to 5-7 overall, 2-2 in the CAC, and will close out league play on Monday.
CNU started things off with a sweep of the three doubles matches. Senior
Kelsey Clark and sophomore
Jackie Gaine did not surrender a game in the No. 2 position, taking on Mollie Johnson and Lauren Rost for an 8-0 win. In the No. 3 battle, CNU rookies
Brook Byrd and
Anna Chekalkina combined for an 8-1 win over Allison Griffin and Emily Rost. The Captains wrapped up the sweep with an 8-3 win at the top spot, as
Katie Carlson and
Jodi Noland combined for the win.
In singles action, CNU picked up wins in positions 2-6, coasting to an 8-1 team win. Gaine had a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win over Rost at the No. 3 spot, while Carlson dropped just a pair of games in her No. 2 win over Emily Stumpfig (6-2, 6-0).
Clark (6-0, 6-3), Byrd (6-4, 6-0) and Chekalkina (6-1, 6-0) rounded out the wins for CNU at Nos. 4-6, in order.
The Captains will close out the regular season on Sunday, April 13, as they travel to Virginia Wesleyan College for the minal match of the year before the CAC Tournament.
