NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The 2014 Christopher Newport University softball regular season comes to a close with two doubleheaders this weekend at Captains Park. CNU, ranked 14th in the country, hosts Wesley College Saturday in a Capital Athletic Conference twin bill. Sunday, in the regular season finale, the Captains entertain Chowan College in non-conference action on Senior Day. Both days will see the first pitch delivered at 1:00 p.m.
Keith Parr's Captains are 28-6 overall and 9-1 in the CAC. The squad is coming off a doubleheader sweep over Mary Washington on Wednesday in Fredericksburg. In the second game of the twin bill, CNU sophomore
Krista Lewis threw a perfect game, retiring all 21 batters she faced. It was just the seventh thrown in CNU's 30-year softball history. Lewis is now 15-2 for the season.
The Captains are currently tied atop the CAC standings with Salisbury. Both teams have one league loss thanks to a split when they met head-to-head on March 22nd at Captains Park. If both squads win their remaining conference games, a coin flip will take place following play on Sunday to determine the host for the 2014 CAC Tournament, which will be played beginning next Thursday, April 17th.
Wesley comes into play on Saturday with a 13-13 overall record, but just a 1-9 mark in the CAC. It will be the first meeting ever of the two schools in softball.
Chowan, formerly a Division III school and Dixie/USA South Athletic Conference member, is now a Division II program. The Hawks are 13-27 heading into play this weekend. Christopher Newport holds a 22-12 lead in the all-time series, but the schools have not met since 2007.
Prior to the first pitch on Sunday, four seniors on the CNU roster will be honored.
Taylor Dillow,
Kristina McLaughlin,
Candice Zollars, and
Kelley Foate will be the focus of Senior Day festivities.
The Captains are 15-1 this season at Captains Park as they head into the final weekend of the regular season.
