NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- With Mother Nature wreaking havoc on the CNU softball schedule, the Captains will now play a home doubleheader on Sunday. Christopher Newport will host Eastern Mennonite beginning at 1 p.m.
The 21st-ranked Captains were originally scheduled to play in this weekend's Sea Gull Invitational, hosted by Salisbury University, but wintry weather conditions forced the cancellation of that tournament. CNU then planned a trip to Salem, Va. to take part in the Roanoke College Softball Bash, but that tournament was cancelled Friday morning due to snow in the Roanoke area.
Instead, Christopher Newport has now scheduled a home doubleheader against Eastern Mennonite at Captains Park where
Keith Parr's team is 4-0 this season.
The Captains have gone on a bit of a run of late, winning six straight games and improving to 7-3 on the season. Newcomers
Jenna Sprinkle and
Karlee Holzbach have helped anchor an offense led by sophomores
Alexis Pope,
Tori Clarke and
Meagan Jones. Sprinkle earned her first start this week and came through with the eventual game-winning, bases-clearing double against the Avenging Angels. Holzbach has a team-leading six RBI, with Pope, and is hitting .438 through eight games of action. Senior
Candice Zollars is also hitting .500 through her first six starts after missing the opening weekend with an injury.
In the pitching circle, sophomores
Krista Lewis and
Hanah Marshall have combined for a 2.46 team ERA this season, striking out 37 batters in 62.2 innings pitched. Lewis is 5-1 with a 1.31 ERA, allowing just six runs in 32 innings of work, while holding opponents to a paltry .186 batting average against.
