NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Cruising to a 9-0 win over Frostburg State University (1-6, 0-2), the Christopher Newport University women's tennis team picked up its first ever win in Capital Athletic Conference action, improving to 5-7 overall, 1-1 in league play.
The Captains pulled ahead, 3-0, after doubles play, dropping just three games against the Bobcats.
Anna Chekalkina and
Kelsey Clark were perfect at No. 3, winning an 8-0 decision over Sara Hildebrand and Ashley Smith. Sophomore
Jackie Gaine and rookie
Logan Eldridge won, 8-1, at No. 2, taking down Amber Beckman and Kennedy Logsdon.
In singles play, senior
Jodi Noland highlighted the action, dropping Beckman with ease at No. 1, with a 6-0, 6-0 decision. Eldridge picked up her second win of the day, defeating Kayla Kirk at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0. Rounding out the flawless wins for CNU was freshman
Katie Carlson, taking a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 over Logdon.
CNU also got two-set victories at No. 3, by Gaine, and No. 5, by Clark. In the No. 6 match, Chekalkina earned a win by retirement, as Ashley Smith bowed out after an injury.
The Captains, ranked No. 12 in the region, will now hit the road for three straight matches this week. CNU will take on Haverford College on March 28 at 4:00 pm
