Nicole Mitchell and
Camry Green, the 14th-ranked Christopher Newport Captains (21-3, 13-2) cruised past the Seahawks of St. Mary's College of Maryland (9-14, 5-10) on Wednesday night. Mitchell and Green each posted double-doubles in the win, and scored over 20 points.
The Captains remain a half game behind No. 13 York College (Pa.) in the CAC standings, with just one game left to play in the regular season. CNU could win a share of the regular season championship and earn the top seed in next week's conference tournament with a victory at Marymount University this Saturday afternoon.
Against the Seahawks, CNU posted its 11th wire-to-wire victory of the season after racing out of the opening whistle to a 11-2 lead. Green led the early burst, scoring nine of the first 11 points in the game, including an old-fashioned three-point play just four minutes into the contest.
The lead would grow to double figures for the first time when sophomore
Jordan Miller drained a three-pointer off an assist by classmate
Brandi Holland with 11:55 showing on the first half clock. After cutting the lead back to eight with 10:09 left, the Captains looked back inside to Green to take a 22-12 lead and never again relinquished the double-digit lead.
CNU led by as many as 17 in the first half, 31-14, after a jumper by Mitchell with 3:54 remaining, and went into the locker room up by 15 points, 36-21. The Captains scored 20 of their 36 points in the opening frame inside the paint, and 12 came off of turnovers. The defense was ratcheted up for the last regular season home game, and CNU had forced 14 turnovers in the first stanza, with seven steals. The Captains allowed St. Mary's to hit just 25% of their shots from the field (7-28), including an 0-for-5 performance from beyond the arc.
Green was dominant in the first 20 minutes, scoring 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while also grabbing six rebounds. She added a steal for good measure, while Mitchell also added eight points and six boards in the first half.
Through the first ten minutes of the second half, St. Mary's held a slight advantage, outscoring CNU 10-5 in the first eight minutes of the frame. From there, however, the Captains turned up the intensity defensively and forced key turnovers to regain control of the game. In the second half, St. Mary's turned the ball over 12 more times, with CNU earning nine steals. For the game, CNU had 16 steals, led by four from senior guard
Chantal Thomas, and three each by senior
Andrea Hobbs and sophomore
Kendra Stone.
While Green shined in the first half, it was Mitchell that took over in the second. She scored 14 points after the break and added four more rebounds to finish with her sixth double-double of the season. She scored a game-high 22 points and added ten rebounds with two assists and two steals. Green finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double, while doing it on an efficient 9-for-13 performance from the field.
Sophomore
Brandi Holland was also in double figures for CNU, with 11 points. Hobbs added five assists and zero turnovers at the point guard position, while Thomas had four points, four rebounds and three steals in her senior night performance.
The Captains shot 41.4% (29-70) from the floor in the game while holding St. Mary's to 33.3% (18-54). CNU scored 26 points off of turnovers and did not give up a made three-pointer in the game. The Seahawks got a double-double from Sophie Pruden (11 pts, 10 reb) and a 20-point effort from Shana Lewis, on 7-of-14 shooting.
CNU will close out the regular season this Saturday, Feb. 22 at Marymount University (15-9, 10-5) with tip set for 2:00 pm.
