CNU Women's Tennis Opens Season With Loss to No. 21 Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport University women's tennis traveled to 21st-ranked Mary Washington for their season opener on Saturday, suffering a 9-0 setback to the nationally-ranked Eagles.

The Captains (0-1, 0-1) were led by sophomore Jackie Gaine, winning a pair of games in both sets against her regionally-ranked singles opponent, Shelby Harris. Gaine suffered a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Harris at No. 2 singles. She also combined with Logan Eldridge to pick up two games against Alina Suyama and Ashley Barrow in a loss at No. 2 doubles. 

In other singles action, rookie Katie Carlson won three games in her first collegiate dual, falling to Alex Ritter 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 4 position. Senior Jodi Noland played at the top spot, falling 6-1, 6-1 to Lindsay Raulston. 

Newcomers Katlyn Yarborough and Hailey Nettles each earned one win apiece, while Eldridge had one in each set for the Captains. 

CNU will return to the court on Sunday, playing on a neutral court opposite former conference rivals, Methodist University. The match will begin at 10:30 am Sunday morning in Fredericksburg.
