NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport women's basketball saw its 25-game home winning streak come to an end tonight, as the University of Mary Washington (15-7, 8-6) stunned the Captains, 74-44. CNU drops just its third game of the season, falling to 19-3 overall, 11-2 in the Capital Athletic Conference.

The Captains suffered a big blow just seven minutes into the game when leading scorer and defensive leader Tia Perry was injured on a defensive rebound with 12:46 remaining in the first half. Forced out of the game for the remainder, the Captains were unable to overcome the key setback as the Eagles built an 11-point halftime lead.

Mary Washington spread the ball around in the first 20 minutes, as eight different players combined to score 35 points. The Eagles dished 10 assists on 16 made baskets, while shooting 50% from the field. Off the bench, Brieneke Matthes led the way with seven points and four rebounds in the opening stanza.

CNU leaned on senior Nicole Mitchell after Perry's exit, knocking down 5-of-8 shots for 10 points. She added four rebounds and one assist, but only five Captains factored into the scoring for CNU in the first half. Junior Camry Green added six points and four rebounds off the bench.

In the second half, Mary Washington methodically increased the lead in the game, outscoring CNU 39-20 after halftime. CNU struggled from the floor, shooting just 21.7% in the second half. Mitchell and Green continued to lead the Captains' offense, finishing with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 11 points, 7 rebounds, respectively.

The hot shooting Eagles would not slow in the second half, though, to stymie any chance at a second-half comeback for the Captains. Led by three players in double figures, Mary Washington ended the game shooting 49.2% from the field, going 31-of-63 from the field. Claire Haeuptle led all scorers with 13 points off the bench, ten of which came in the second half, followed by 12 points from rookie Brianne Comden and 10 points by Matthes.

Christopher Newport will be back in action on Saturday, February 15 as they host Penn State Harrisburg (6-16, 1-12) at 2:00 pm.
