Senior
Camry Green posted her second straight double-double to open the season, and junior
Jordan Miller matched her career-high with four made three-pointers. Rookie
Bailey Dufrene was named to the All-Tournament Team after pouring in 23 points and six rebounds in two games off the bench.
Miller got things started with three long-range jumpers in the first 4:39, staking the Captains to a 10-4 lead off the opening whistle, but a 7-2 run going the other way got the Maroons back within one, 12-11. Roanoke would add to the run, getting ahead 15-12 on a layup by Ellen Wagner with 11:13 remaining in the first half, and never looked back. Rookie
Anitra Thomas knocked down a jumper to pull back within one, 15-14, but another 9-1 spurt saw Roanoke take control with a 24-15 lead and less than eight minutes remaining in the first half.
At the half, the Captains offense was struggling, knocking down just 6-of-33 first-half attempts for an 18.2% shooting percentage. After the three trey's to start the half, the Captains managed just three made field goals in over 15 minutes of the half. Still, CNU trailed by just 15 points at the break, as the Maroons pulled away for a 39-24 edge. Kelsey Smith led all scorers for Roanoke, scoring 12 points on 4-of-5 from the field with four rebounds. Miller's 11 points was a team-high for CNU, while Green grabbed seven first-half rebounds.
The Maroons lead would build to 20 points with the first five points of the second half as Meghan Gadell hit a pair of free-throws followed by a three-pointer from Tatum McKee. Dufrene responded with a steal and layup, and Miller knocked down her fourth three-pointer of the game at the 15:42 mark to get CNU back within 15. The lead would teeter between 13- and 20-points for the majority of the second half, but CNU sparked a late run to get back within single digits with just over four minutes remaining.
After Roanoke took a 65-49 lead on a pair of free-throws from Cary Breahm with 6:25 remaining, the Captains put together a 9-1 run to get back within eight points, 66-58, with 4:11 left. Green, Dufrene and sophomore
Lauren Cox each had three points in the run, including a long three-pointer from Cox to cap the burst. She was set up by a steal from rookie
Makeda Wright, who found Cox open for the trey. The roll would end their, though, as the Maroons held off the CNU comeback with strong free-throw shooting down the stretch, capturing a 74-62 win in the neutral court battle.
CNU held a second-period edge of 17-5 on points off turnovers, as well as a 14-6 edge in points in the pain. For the game, both teams collected 18 points in the paint, while CNU held a slight 23-16 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Captains shot 32.6% in the second half, with 14-for-43 shooting after halftime. In the game, CNU knocked down 26.3% from the field, including a 31.3% game from beyond the arc. Miller's four led the Captains team effort of 10 made three-pointers, as Dufrene and Wright each dropped in a pair, while Cox and
Kendra Stone also added one made. Green finished with 11 points and 17 rebounds, marking her second straight 17-rebound effort in the Marriott Invitational. Miller's 14 points were two shy of her career high, set against the Maroons.
Roanoke was led by a pair of 18-point performances, as Smith and McKee each dropped in that total, adding 14 rebounds combined. Beahm added 12 rebounds and seven points despite a 1-for-8 performance from the field.
CNU will return to action on Wednesday, November 19 as they travel to Bridgewater College for their third straight ODAC opponent to start the season. The Eagles and Captains will tip off at 7:00 pm.
