SALISBURY, Md. -- With a first-round bye already clinched for both teams, the top seed and regular season conference championship is up for grabs in Wednesday afternoon's women's soccer game between Christopher Newport and Salisbury. The Captains (11-3-3, 7-0-1) will travel to take on the second-place Sea Gulls (10-4-3, 7-1-0) looking for home field advantage throughout the CAC Tournament.
Salisbury will provide live stats and a live video webcast of the game, scheduled to kick off at 3:00 pm. The Captains are ranked 7th in this week's NSCAA South-Atlantic Regional Rankings and the Sea Gulls are in top form heading into the postseason, winning nine of their last ten games coming into Wednesday's finale.
The CNU women's team has paired one of the league's top offenses with one of it's stingiest defenses this season, outscoring opponents 41-14 through 17 games of action. The Captains have dominated defensively in league play, allowing just three goals in eight games of CAC action, while pouring in 22 goals offensively. The defense has been led by sophomore goalkeeper
Haley Casanova, this week's CAC Defensive Player of the Week. Casanova ranks second in the league in goals against average (0.71), and against league opponents, no one has been better, allowing just one goal in over 520 minutes of action.
Offensively, sophomore
Victoria Perry ranks second in the conference in scoring, with 34 points, while leading the talented CNU attack with 14 goals and six assists. Senior
Sarah Perrett has added seven goals and one assist for 15 points, while midfielder
Joy Piirto has also compiled 15 points with six goals and three assists. Rookie
Kimmie Kerstiens and junior
Lindsay Mondloch are also in double figures, with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Salisbury has given up more goals, with 19 allowed this season, but has saved the offense for the right time, scoring 19 of their 30 goals this season in conference play. Logan O'Meara, with 15 points, and Victoria Luc, with 18, are the Sea Gulls only players in double figures. Head coach Kwame Lloyd has shuffled the lineup all season, with only five players starting more than 12 games. Senior goalkeeper Michelle Conrad has a 1.06 goals against average with 58 saves while manning the net in all but 15 minutes of action this season.
Regardless of the result, both team's will get the day off Saturday when first round action of the CAC Tournament is underway. Salisbury and CNU will then host a semifinal matchup on Wednesday, November 5 for their next game, vying for a chance to play in the CAC Championship game.
