CNU Hosts CAC Women's Basketball Matchup vs Frostburg State at 2:00 pm Saturday

Part of conference doubleheader in Freeman Center

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After wrapping up the non-conference slate with a win over Va. Wesleyan, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will get back into conference play this Saturday, versus Frostburg State University. Tip is set for 2:00 pm as the Captains (8-2, 1-1) kick off the new year against the Bobcats, as part of a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader with the men's team, tipping off at approximately 4:00 pm.

The Bobcats (2-6, 1-2) will be playing in their first game since December 21 and the Captains will be looking to extend a 20-game home winning streak. It is the first time the two programs have matched up in over 20 years, with CNU winning both of the two previous matchups in 1991-92 & 1992-93.

Links to live stats and a live video webcast can be found on the CNU website, under the women's basketball schedule page.

Head coach Bill Broderick has leaned on the senior class in 2013-14, including leading scorers and rebounders Tia Perry and Nicole Mitchell. Perry is just 13 points shy of 17th all-time on the CNU scoring chart, Linda Richardson's 1,091 career points, and is leading the squad with 18.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. Mitchell is right behind, with 16.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest, anchoring a senior class that is accounting for 43 of the team's 73.9 points per game.

The potent offense has also seen support from the sophomore class as Jordan Miller, Kendra Stone and Brandi Holland have over 22 points per game combined. Holland comes off the bench and ranks third on the team in scoring, with 10.4 points per game, while the other two are staples in the CNU starting lineup.

Frostburg State has struggled through the first section of their schedule, dropping six of their first eight games, including three of the last four. The Bobcats, though, have three players averaging double figures, and features an offense averaging 70 points per game. Ronje James is pouring in 16.5 points per game, while Elaina Hummel and Simone Wise are adding 15.3 and 12.8, respectively.
