ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Christopher Newport University's 16th-ranked women's basketball team returned to action Monday night and earned a 70-58 win on the road at St. Mary's College of Maryland. The Captains were paced by senior Tia Perry who collected 20 points; 10 in each half.

Returning to the court for their second game in three days, CNU could not replicate the offensive output from their 116-89 victory at Frostburg State Saturday, but were able to overcome a 51-33 rebounding deficit by forcing 31 Seahawks turnovers. The Captains would take advantage of the St. Mary's miscues, scoring 31 points off of Seahawk giveaways.

Christopher Newport would never trail in the game, racing out to an 11-2 lead in the first 3:24 of game action. The lead would climb all the way to 17 before halftime, as CNU pulled ahead 39-22 in the final minute of the first stanza. Shana Lewis scored on a layup in the final possession to cut the halftime lead to just 15, but CNU was in control, up 39-24.

Perry's 10 points came on 3-of-6 shooting, with a 4-for-5 effort from the free-throw line. She added three rebounds and three steals to lead the way for CNU. Nicole Mitchell added eight points and four rebounds, while post players Kendra Stone and Camry Green each added seven in the first 20 minutes.

The Seahawks burst out of the locker room on a 7-0 run, cutting the lead to just eight with 15:54 remaining, but the Captains had a response. Scoring nine straight points of their own, CNU surged back ahead by 17, 48-31, getting four points from Perry and five by Mitchell.

A three-pointer by Mitchell with 11:28 showing would give CNU a game-high 18-point lead, 51-33, and the Captains would hold off another surge by St. Mary's to hang on for a 70-58 victory. Sophie Pruden posted a double-double for the Seahawks, with 17 points and 14 rebounds, but a trio of double-figure scoring effort for CNU would lead the way. Perry finished with her sixth 20-point performance of the season with a 7-15 shooting effort, adding seven rebounds and three steals. Mitchell backed up her career-high 38 against Frostburg State with 19 points and seven rebounds in tonight's contest, and Camry Green added ten points off the bench.

CNU will return to action on Wednesday, January 29 as they host Southern Virginia in league action.
