NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In their first home game of 2013, the Christopher Newport women's soccer had ample offensive opportunity, but could only cash in with one goal and ended up falling, 2-1, in overtime to Baldwin Wallace University (3-0) on the first day of the Captains Classic. CNU got the equalizer from senior Bupe Okeowo in the 68th minute, but Katie Klespies knocked home the winner just 3:20 into extra time for a Yellow Jackets win.Â
Christopher Newport falls to 2-1 on the season with their first setback. The Captains Classic continues on Sunday, as Baldwin Wallace takes on Virginia Wesleyan at 1:00 pm, followed by CNU's home game against Kean University at 3:00 pm.
Both goalkeepers had strong performances in today's game, combining for 16 total saves. BWU's Emily Tallmadge made seven, while CNU's rookie netminder, Haley Casanova, stopped nine attempts.Â
The Yellow Jackets broke through first, as Hannah Cavalier got behind the CNU defense after a high bounding pass from Kelly Gough. Cavalier, loose of her defender, smashed a shot into the near corner for her first goal of the season.Â
The 1-0 edge would hold up through halftime, despite CNU putting nine shots up, including five on-goal. Tallmadge stopped all five, including a sensational diving save on a Joy Piirto shot late in the half.Â
In the second half, the Captains' offense continued to pressure Tallmadge and the BW defense. In the 68th minute, Piirto sent Okeowo on past the defense with a pretty through ball up the middle. From inside the box on the right side, Okeowo knocked home the goal with her right foot, past the diving keeper.Â
The close chances kept coming for CNU in the second half, with 12 total shots and four more on-goal. Senior forward Emma O'Reilly hit the post with one shot and Kelsey Thomas blistered one that Tallmadge was forced to make a nice save.
At the start of extra time, O'Reilly took the only shot for CNU, getting blocked. Then, just 3:20 into the overtime period, Baldwin Wallace got loose down the field. Heather Keller dribbled into the left corner before sending a nice cross into the box where Klespies collected and poked in the game-winning goal.Â
Okeowo now leads the team with five points in the young season, scoring two goals and adding one assist. She tied O'Reilly for the team lead in shots in the game, with five each, while Piirto, Thomas and Lindsay Mondloch each had three attempts. The Captains outshot the Yellow Jackets, 22-17, with a 9-7 edge on-goal.
Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for the CNU/Kean contest on Sunday, set to begin at approximately 3:00 pm. Kean suffered a 3-0 loss to Va. Wesleyan in the day's opener, falling to 2-2 on the season.Â
