CNU Women's Soccer Hosts Captains Classic This Weekend

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- This weekend, Christopher Newport University women's soccer fans will have their first opportunity of 2013 to check out this year's squad at home, as they host the Captains Classic on Saturday and Sunday. CNU will play Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday, followed by a game against Kean University on Sunday, with both tilts set to kick off at 3:00 pm. Virginia Wesleyan will play the other side of the Classic format, at 1:00 pm.

Live stats will be available of all four games, with live video streaming for the Captains' contests. All links can be found at CNUsports.com.

CNU is off to a 2-0 start after the opening weekend, defeating Fredonia State and Meredith College each by a score of 2-0. Senior Emma O'Reilly has led the way, scoring twice for her 38th and 39th career goals. With the first tally of the season, O'Reilly broke the Captains all-time goals scored record. Senior Bupe Okeowo has added one goal and an assist, while rookie Victoria Perry has added one score.

Freshman goalkeeper Haley Casanova has been stellar in her first two appearances, picking up a pair of shutouts while making four saves. She was named the Capital Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts, playing every minute in goal.

The three teams coming into Newport News for this year's Captains Classic provide a formidable field of competition. The one team CNU won't face this weekend is on the schedule for next week, the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins. Last season, the Marlins were one of the top teams in the region, but suffered the graduation of two-time All-American Jessica Edelman. Head coach Jeff Bowers has led the team to a 1-0-1 start after the opening weekend, with a draw against Meredith and a 1-0 victory over Fredonia State.

On Saturday afternoon, CNU will take on the Yellow Jackets from Baldwin Wallace at 3:00 pm. Last year, BWU finished with a 12-3-4 overall record and have posted back-to-back double-digit win seasons. This year, the Yellow Jackets are off to a hot start, going 2-0 in their first two games, outscoring opponents 8-2.

Kean University will wrap up the tournament, coming in with the most games played out of the quartet. The Cougars are 2-1 to start the year, scoring six goals in their last game against FDU-Florham. Eight different Kean players have registered goals so far this season.
