NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's soccer team will take on their cross-water rivals from Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night, with kick-off set for 7:30 pm. CNU has opened the year with a 2-1-1 start, while the Marlins have posted a 3-0-1 record through the first four games.Â
The teams should be very familiar with eachother, as both played in eachothers home-opening tournaments. The Captains played in the Marlins' tournament, dubbed the Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists Invitational, and Va. Wesleyan made the return trip across the water for CNU's Annual Captains Classic last weekend.Â
Christopher Newport's offense has been led by their senior forwards, Emma O'Reilly and Bupe Okeowo. O'Reilly, the Captains' all-time leader in goal-scoring, became the first player in CNU women's soccer history to reach the 40-goal plateau in CNU's last game. She leads the squad with three goals, while Okeowo has added five points on two goals and an assist.Â
Defensively, CNU's rookie goalkeeper Haley Casanova has been strong, allowing just three goals in her first four games. She has two shutouts and a 0.70 goals against average.Â
On the other side, the Marlins are riding a three-game winning streak heading into Wednesday's contest. Sophomore Kaitlyn Clunan has scored four times, leading the way offensively, while rookie keeper Megan Gerhart has been impressive between the pipes, posting a 0.24 GAA in four starts. She has allowed just one goal in 380 minutes of action, making 13 saves.Â
The game will be the second half of a doubleheader with the Va. Wesleyan men's team, as they take on Southern Virginia at 5:00 pm. Live stats will be available at the start of the women's game, at approximately 7:30 pm.
