ORLANDO, Fla. -- Despite falling into a 2-1 hole after doubles play, the Christopher Newport women bounced back in singles action, winning four matches for the win over Berry College, 5-4.
Jackie Gaine and
Angela Stallman picked up the critical doubles victory for CNU at the No. 3 position, winning 8-2.
The underclassmen combined to beat Lib Lockett and Heidi Seabaugh at No. 3, which would prove to be a huge win. Both of CNU's tandems at No. 1 and No. 2 were narrowly edged out, as
Kim Morrissett and
Marion Gloor fell, 8-6, at No. 1, and
Jodi Noland and
Melisande Downs added a 9-7 setback at No. 2.
In singles play, Gaine and Stallman would again come away with crucial wins at the bottom of the lineup. Gaine played Anna Kate Shepherd in the No. 5 matchup, winning 6-4, 6-2; Stallman took on Lockett in singles play at No. 6, and won by a dominant 6-1, 6-1 final.
Berry came away with victories at No. 1 and No. 4, but CNU held on for the win with wins at No. 2 and 3. Gloor defeated Emma O'Reilly at the second position, 6-4, 6-3, and Noland dropped Caitlin Smith, 6-2, 6-2 for the deciding point.
Christopher Newport improved to 3-4 with the win, dropping Berry to 3-1 overall this season. The Captains return home from their Spring Break trip and will next take on Washington College on March 12 at 2:00 pm.
