Win Streak Hits Double Figures As CNU Women's Tennis Sweeps Averett, 9-0

Match Box Score

DANVILLE, Va. -- The CNU women's tennis team ran their win streak to 10 today, sweeping Averett University (0-10, 0-8) in USA South Athletic Conference action, 9-0. Christopher Newport (12-4, 8-0) extended the longest win streak since 2009-10, dropping just three games in singles play in the match.

Averett, competing with just five players, was in an early 2-0 lead due to forfeits at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. The Captains added a pair of wins at the other two doubles positions to take a 4-0 lead in the match.

Seniors Kim Morrissett and Marion Gloor combined for an 8-2 win at No. 1, dropping Suvi Salminen and Morgan Epstein. At No. 2 doubles, rookie Jackie Gaine paired with Jodi Noland for an 8-0 win over Jewel Dale and Jessie Gomes.

In singles, Downs, Gaine, Angela Stallman and Angie Menendez all picked up 6-0, 6-0 wins against their opponents. Downs' win came against Epstein at No. 2, while Gaine moved up to No. 3 for the win against Dale.

At the No. 1 position, Morrissett faced a tough match against Salminen. Against Methodist, the USA South's co-leader with CNU, Salminen picked up a three-set win in the top flight against the Monarchs' Katherine Meindl. On Friday, Morrissett dispatched the Averett player, 6-2, 6-1.

CNU will play two matches on Saturday, March 30, on the road. The Captains are scheduled for a non-conference bout against Bridgewater at 10:00 a.m., followed by a USA South match at Mary Baldwin at 3:00 p.m.
