NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In today's season opening match, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team fell to Division I Norfolk State (3-1) despite a pair of solid performances in singles play. The Captains were defeated, 7-0, but junior Jodi Noland and freshman Jackie Gaine each posted set victories before falling in a tiebreak. 

Noland battled for her victory at No. 3 singles, opening the match with a 7-6 (7-2) win over her opponent Laura Gutierrez. The Spartan player bounced back to win the second, 6-2, and held off Noland for a 10-3 win in the tiebreak. At No. 5 singles, the rookie playing in her first collegiate dual raced out ahead of Kia Batiste with a 6-3 win in the first set, but fell by the same score in the second. Then, in the tiebreak, the two went back-and-forth but Batiste pulled away with a 10-6 win in the tiebreaker. 

Seniors Marion Gloor (3-6, 3-6) and Melisande Downs (1-6, 1-6) each picked up games in each set but were unable to overcome their Division I opponents. Kim Morrissett played at No. 1 and Angela Stallman at No. 4 to round out the Captains entries. In doubles action, Gaine paired with Stallman and was leading 6-5 at No. 3 doubles, but the match was unfinished due to NSU taking the other two doubles matches.

CNU falls to 0-1 and will next take on St. Mary's College (Md.) on February 24 at 1:00 pm.
