YORK, Pa. -- After running off five straight victories, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team will have a big test this Saturday, as the Captains (5-1, 0-0) take on undefeated York College (Pa.) in their first ever Capital Athletic Conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 1:00 pm at Charles Wolf Gymnasium in the Grumbacher Center; links to live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.
The Spartans (7-0, 2-0) are just outside the national Top 25 according to D3hoops.com, while CNU is ranked 15th by that poll and 14th in the
USA Today Sports Division III Coaches' Poll. The two teams have only matched up three times in the all-time series, with CNU holding a 2-1 advantage, including an 81-52 victory in the 2011 NCAA Tournament en route to the Final Four.
The Captains, through their first six games, are one of the top scoring offenses in the nation, averaging 85.2 points per game. York (Pa.), on the other hand, has the 14th-ranked scoring defense in the nation, holding opponents to a paltry 48.7 points per game. Leading the way for CNU's potent attack has been senior
Tia Perry, who just became the 24th player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau. With 1,009 career points, Perry is now 21st all-time in CNU scoring with the bulk of her senior year yet to play.
Fellow senior
Nicole Mitchell is also climbing the scoring charts and should threaten the Top 20 all-time at CNU as well. After a season-high 25-point performance on Wednesday, Mitchell has 878 career points and is averaging a career-best 15.8 points per game so far this season. Joining Perry's 19.0 ppg and Mitchell's production, sophomore
Brandi Holland is also adding double figures, averaging 11.7 points per game.
York has been led by a pair of dominant front-court seniors, including former CAC Rookie of the Year Kristen Haley. Now playing in her fourth and final season, the six foot senior is scoring a team-best 16.3 points per game. Classmate Brittany Hicks is averaging a double-double, pouring in 13.7 points and grabbing 10.1 rebounds per game.
The team's stifling defense is partially a product of a big rebounding margin (+12.3), while the front court is among the national leaders in blocked shots per game. With 38 shots swatted this season, led by Haley's 13, the Spartans are an intimidating opponent in the paint.
