LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport University women's basketball, ranked No. 19 nationally in the
USA Today Sports Division III Coaches' Top 25, returns to action on Sunday after a week off for final exams. The Captains (5-2) will tip off against Lynchburg College (3-4) at 4:00 pm at Turner Gymnasium on the Hornets' campus.
Live stats and a live video webcast will be available, with links found at CNUsports.com or the Lynchburg athletics website.
CNU has been off the hardwood for over a week, last taking on York College (Pa.) on December 7, falling to the Spartans 75-63. The setback was just the second of the season for head coach
Bill Broderick's squad, who had run off five straight wins prior. The Captains will look to bounce back in one of their final non-conference tilts of the season. CNU holds an 8-2 advantage in the all-time series against Lynchburg.
This season, the Captains have been led by seniors
Tia Perry and
Nicole Mitchell and boast the 23rd-ranked scoring offense in the nation. As a team, CNU is pouring in 82.0 points per game, while Perry's 18.0 and Mitchell's 16.0 have led the pack. Sophomore
Brandi Holland is also averaging double figures, with 11.9 points per game, while averaging 25 minutes off the bench.
Defensively, CNU does a good job forcing turnovers and limiting mistakes with the basketball, ranking 14th nationally in turnover margin. With 89 steals and 20 blocks through the first seven games, Christopher Newport balances its potent offense with a stifling defense, holding opponents to just 68.9 points per game.
Lynchburg will play William Peace University on Saturday, but prior to that game the Hornets had won three of their last five games, including a 66-50 victory against Bridgewater last week. Three Lynchburg players are averaging double figure scoring, led by junior forward Shannon Allan with 15.9 points per game. Chaney Forbush is averaging a double-double, with 12.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per contest.
