MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- Sophomore
Lindsay Mondloch scored in the opening half to give CNU a 1-0 lead, but the Christopher Newport women's soccer team would give up three second half goals to Bowdoin, falling in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. The Captains wrap up the season with a 14-4-2 overall record, while Bowdoin (12-3-1) advances to take on host and top-ranked Montclair State on Sunday.
CNU held a 6-3 advantage in shots in the first half, including four in the first 31 minutes. The fourth would come off the foot of Mondloch with less than 15 minutes to go in the first half as she put away her third goal of the season.Â
The Captains got another shot just moments later from leading scorer
Bupe Okeowo, but the attempt went high. Before the end of the half, rookie goalkeeper
Haley Casanova would need to turn away a pair of shots from the Polar Bears, keeping Bowdoin off the board for the first 45 minutes.
Early in the second half, the Captains withstood a barrage of shots by Bowdoin, including two more saves from Casanova. A two-minute span 15 minutes into the stanza, though, would flip the scoreboard in favor of the Polar Bears.
First, Demi Feder set up leading scorer Kiersten Turner, who flicked a shot over Casanova's head for the equalizer. Then, just two minutes later, Jenna DiCicco switched fields to Maggie Godley, who laced a hard shot into the left side of the goal from the top of the 18-yard box.Â
In the 72nd minute, Bowdoin would get an insurance goal from Molly Popolizio, off an assist by Morgan Woodhouse. The Captains would be unable to erase the lead and suffered a loss in their seventh NCAA Tournament appearance.
Okeowo led the Captains in shots, with four, including one on-goal.
Emma O'Reilly and Mondloch each added shots on-frame. The Polar Bears got three goals from three different players, while DiCicco led the squad with three shots on-goal.Â
CNU concludes the season with a 14-4-2 overall record for their best mark since 2010.Â
