MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- Making the seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in CNU women's soccer history, the Christopher Newport Captains (14-3-2) will play in a neutral site contest in the 2013 Championship First Round against Bowdoin College (11-3-1) on Saturday night at 7:30 pm. The game will be played at top-ranked Montclair State University, who will play Colby-Sawyer in the first game at 5:00 pm.
Admission to the postseason event is $6 for adults, $3 for students, children, seniors and military with a valid ID. Live stats will be available at CNUsports.com.Â
In head coach
Dan Weiler's first season at Christopher Newport, he makes his seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in the last eight seasons. Prior to coming to CNU, Weiler guided Concordia-Moorhead to the Sweet 16 in three of those six trips since 2006. The Captains will look to mirror that success under Weiler's tutelage, as they head back to the postseason tournament for the first time since 2010.Â
Taking on a formidable Polar Bears lineup, the Captains will lean on a veteran scoring group at the top of the field. Senior
Bupe Okeowo was named the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year earlier this week, and is enjoying the finest season of her career in her final campaign. With 32 points on 14 goals and four assists, Okeowo led the CAC in total scoring.
She is joined up top by the Captains' all-time leading scorer,
Emma O'Reilly, and freshman sensation
Victoria Perry. O'Reilly has scored a program-best 51 goals, adding nine assists for 111 career points. She is the first player in CNU history to eclipse the 100-point plateau. Perry was named the league's offensive player of the week once this season and ranks tied for fourth on the team in points with 10, on two goals and a team-high six assists.
Defensively, CNU features a pair of dynamic freshmen contributors, led by CAC Defensive Player of the Year
Sam Rabinek in one of the center back positions. Paired with
Haley Casanova, the freshman phenom between the pipes, the Captains defense was stingy throughout the year. CNU allowed just 13 goals, for a 0.66 goals against average, and is allowing just over 10 shots per game.
The Polar Bears have won eight of their last ten games, outscoring opponents 28-9 in that stretch, including six games with three goals or more. The potent attack has been led by first team All-NESCAC selection Kiersten Turner, who was the league leader in goals scored (11) and points (26). One of four All-Conference selections, Turner was joined on the first team by defender Becky Stoneman, who helped the Bowdoin D allow just 12 goals in 15 contests this year.Â
The matchup will be the first in the all-time series, and the second game on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled tentatively for 7:30 pm.Â
