BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Junior
Joy Piirto scored her first two goal of the season less than three minutes in, helping lead CNU past Southern Virginia University (3-6-1) in women's soccer action Wednesday night, 4-1. The Captains outshot the host Knights, 16-3, while improving to 8-2-1 on the season.
While both CNU and Southern Virginia are members of the Capital Athletic Conference, the game will not count toward the league standings in 2013, as the Knights are still under an NCAA provisional period because of its transition to Division III.
The Captains wasted no time getting things going in the Tuesday evening tilt, lighting up the scoreboard just 2:49 into the match. Leading scorer
Emma O'Reilly slipped a pass to Piirto at the top of the box, and the junior midfielder unleashed a hard shot past goalkeeper MaKenzie Cox. It was her first goal of the season, and O'Reilly's third helper.
CNU would then tack on two more quick goals back-to-back in the middle of the opening stanza. Senior
Bupe Okeowo got what would hold up as the eventual gamewinner on a corner kick taken by
Lindsay Mondloch, as she headed home her sixth scoring strike of the season. Then, just 1:20 later in the 31st minute, rookie
Sam Rabinek struck for her second goal of the contest. Mondloch added a second assist, again on a corner kick, as Rabinek put away the shot to give CNU a 3-0 edge.
Southern Virginia took just three shots in the ball game, all coming in the first 35 minutes. The first two were denied by CNU's rookie goalkeeper,
Haley Casanova, but the Knights struck for their lone goal in the 35th minute on a breakaway. Lora Palmer found teammate Tatiana Monsen open in the box from the right side and SVU got on the board.
That would be all the offense the Knights could muster, though, as CNU's defense shut down the home team the rest of the way, not giving up another shot. CNU also only allowed a pair of corner kick attempts, while taking 12 and scoring on a pair.
CNU's last goal would come in the 74th minute when O'Reilly added an insurance goal on a breakaway of her own. She smoked a 20-yard shot past the keeper for her ninth goal of the year. The tally pushed her over 20 points on the season, giving her 21 for her third 20-point season of her career. It also pushed her to an even 100 points in her career, giving CNU its first player to break the century mark in their tenure.
The Captains return to conference action on Saturday, as they play host to Frostburg State (5-5-1, 2-0-1) at 1:00 pm. The game is part of a doubleheader with the men's teams and live stats will be available for both contests.
