Captains Travel to Southern Virginia for Women's Soccer Action Wednesday

BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Winners in five of their last six games, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team travels to Southern Virginia University (3-5-1) tonight, for a 6:00 pm kickoff. The Captains (7-2-1) will be playing in Buena Vista, Va. for the first time in program history, taking on the Knights for just the second time. CNU won the first matchup in 2000, 5-0.

Live video will begin at kickoff, by clicking here.

Both CNU and Southern Virginia are new to the Capital Athletic Conference this season, but Tuesday's matchup will not count toward the league standings in 2013. Although the Knights are a full-time member of the CAC, the school is still under an NCAA provisional period because of its transition to Division III.

The Knights have played all but two of their games away from home this season and are unbeaten in their last three contests. Outscoring opponents 17-2 in the last three games, Southern Virginia comes in with a hot hand, but Christopher Newport will counter with a streak of their own. CNU is outscoring opponents 17-4 over the last five games, led by seniors Emma O'Reilly and Bupe Okeowo.

O'Reilly, the Captains' all-time leading scorer, has put away eight scoring strikes and assisted on a pair for a team-high 18 points; Okeowo has added five goals and two assists for a 12-point season to date. Last game, though, the Captains showcased the team's depth in a 6-0 victory over Penn State Harrisburg. All six goals were scored by different players, and each was the first tally of the season for the CNU player. Rookie Caitlyn Pabst had a strong performance, scoring her first goal while also assisting on another.

Defensively, rookie goalkeeper Haley Casanova locked up her fifth shutout in seven wins this season, while also combining for a sixth. She has allowed a mere seven goals this season, and boasts a 0.79 goals against average.

Southern Virginia features a potent attack that is averaging nearly three goals per game. Lora Palmer and Tatiana Monsen have each scored a team-high seven goals, while Palmer has added five assists to her ledger. Junior goalkeeper Makenzie Cox has started eight games this season, stopping 43 shots with a 2.17 goals against average.
