DOVER, Del. -- Senior
Bupe Okeowo ran her scoring streak to six straight games as she again led the Christopher Newport women's soccer team to their eighth straight win, with a 1-0 victory on the road at Wesley College (4-12-1, 0-7-0). The Captains, who clinched the top seed in the CAC Tournament, improved to 13-2-1 with a perfect 7-0 mark in league play.
CNU picked up their fourth straight shutout with an impressive display of dominance over the Wolverines. The Captains outshot the home team, 39-0, including a 17-0 advantage in shots on-goal.
Wesley's goalkeeper, Samantha Brannigan, did an equally impressive job keeping the Captains off the board, however, as CNU was held empty for the first 87 minutes of the game. While the CNU defense held, so too did the Wolverines keeper, stopping 15 shots before the Captains finally broke through with the late gamewinner.
With just 2:08 left on the clock, junior
Kelsey Thomas played a perfect pass across the field into the box. Okeowo got a head on it and directed it into the left corner of the goal. It was her team-leading 11th goal and league-leading sixth game-winning strike.
Even more impressively, the Captains senior forward has scored the winner in three straight games and four of the last five games. The Dumfries, Va. native has been red hot, adding to her career best season at a frenetic pace, with 19 points in the current eight-game roll by the Captains.
Thomas and
Lindsay Mondloch each led the way for CNU with three shots on-goal, while Okeowo and senior
Emma O'Reilly took a team-high seven total shots in the game. The assist was the second of the year for Thomas.
Brannigan finished with a career-high 16 saves and the lone goal allowed for Wesley.
CNU will close out the regular season on Tuesday, October 29 as they travel to St. Mary's (Md.) for a 3:30 kickoff. The Captains will then turn their attention to the CAC Tournament, where they have earned a first-round bye.
