NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's soccer team will put their six-game winning streak on the line Wednesday afternoon, as they travel to face the University of Mary Washington (8-7-0, 3-3-0) at 3:30 pm. Wednesday's game will be the first time since 2009 that the two teams have met, and just the sixth matchup in the all-time series. The Eagles hold a 3-1-1 advantage in the series, including a 2-0-1 mark in their last three games.
Christopher Newport is on a six-game roll, outscoring opponents 19-2 in that span with four shutouts. Rookie goalkeeper
Haley Casanova has started in goal all 14 games this season, and is among the league leaders in goals against average and save percentage. She picked up her second CAC Defensive Player of the Week honor this week, locking up her sixth and seventh shutouts of the year. With 16 saves in two games, CNU took over first place in the league standings behind the strong effort by Casanova.
Offensively, CNU features a dynamic twosome at the top of the attack, as seniors
Emma O'Reilly and
Bupe Okeowo have combined for 41 total points this season. O'Reilly, who recently eclipsed the 100-point plateau for her career, leads the team with 10 goals and three assists, while Okeowo, the league's reigning Offensive Player of the Week, has notched four game-winning goals in seven strikes this season.
In the middle of the park, senior
Carly Utterback, junior
Joy Piirto and sophomore
Lindsay Mondloch have been huge factors, combining for five goals and ten assists. In her first season with CNU, Mondloch leads the team with five assists, including three that have given CNU the lead in games this year. Utterback ranks third all-time in career assists at CNU, with 18 helpers, and Piirto has found her stroke lately, notching a pair of goals in the last four games.
The Captains will take on a Mary Washington team that has scored a lot of goals this season, averaging 2.1 goals per game. The Eagles feature four double-digit scorers, including league-leading Erin Reynolds. Reynolds, a senior forward, has put away 12 goals with two assists for 26 total points, while three sophomores have also scored in double figures.
Junior Alyssa Goodwin has started ten games in goal for the Eagles, boasting a 1.05 goals against average. In nearly 900 minutes of action, Goodwin has allowed ten goals with 32 saves.
