MANHEIM, Pa. -- Behind another dominant performance, the Christopher Newport volleyball team extended its winning streak to six straight matches as the Captains took down Penn State Harrisburg, 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-21), on Friday evening at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex.
In a battle featuring two of the newest members of the Capital Athletic Conference, CNU made quick work of the Lions in the three-set sweep. The victory moves Christopher Newport to 17-11 on the season, including 4-0 in league action. The setback drops Penn State Harrisburg to 5-19 overall and 0-5 in the CAC.
During the contest,
Ashley Rock helped pace the offense while setting a new career-high with eight kills on just 14 swings.
Krista Hughes was equally efficient, pumping eight blasts to go along with a .700 hitting percentage. Both standouts also collected a block to help balance out a well-rounded evening.
Along with Hughes and Rock, the Captains also benefited from several strong efforts from the freshman class. In her first extended action in six weeks,
Harper Smith showed no signs of rust and pounded eight kills on 16 attempts. Fellow classmates
Briana Sutton and
Hannah Miller each chucked five kills apiece as well.
Helping keep the hitters happy,
Rachel Conway posted 20 assists against the Lions, which marked her 28th consecutive match with at least 10 helpers. That streak equals the longest single-season run by a Captain since Brittany Collins rolled off 40 straight during the 2007 campaign.
Additionally,
Paxton Crooks chipped in with 18 assists, which stands as her highest three-set total since dishing out 31 in the season opener against Lynchburg on August 30.
Peppering the Lions from the service line, Christopher Newport also came through with 12 aces on Friday, which marked the team's second-highest total of the season.
Evelyn Harper and
Brooke Moore led the way with three apiece, while
Abby McIntyre and
Chance Rye each pounded a pair. McIntyre has now laced at least two winners in four straight matches, while Harper has unloaded three in three of her last four appearances.
On the defensive end, Moore led the way with seven digs, while
Jessie Kolden chipped in with six. Along the front line, six Captains collected a block, including solo stops by Smith and
Chastity Lacy. With that rejection, Lacy now sits just one shy of 100 for the season, which would make her only the fourth Captain in program history to reach that plateau in back-to-back campaigns.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday when the squad heads to St. Mary's for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Seahawks.
