NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- This weekend, Captains Field will play host to the 2012 Captains Classic where the CNU women's soccer team will look to bounce back with games against Mount St. Joseph and Stockton College. The tournament will begin Saturday at 1:00 pm with Virginia Wesleyan taking on Stockton, followed at 3:00 pm with the CNU game versus Mount St. Joseph. On Sunday, the 1 pm game will feature the Marlins against the Lions, and a 3 pm tilt between the Captains and Ospreys.

The Captains have opened the season 1-2 with goals scored in all three matches so far by senior Dani Gunderson. The CNU midfielder is on fire to start the year, with three goals and an assist for seven total points. Rookie goalkeeper Elena Currence is 1-1 in net for CNU, posting a shutout over Rutgers-Newark and falling at the hands of nationally ranked Virginia Wesleyan.

The Marlins will play their second and third straight games at Captains Field when they join the Captains Classic to take on the out-of-state opponents. Led by All-American Jessica Edleman, the 16th ranked Virginia Wesleyan squad has raced out to a 3-0 start.

Stockton College has also started the season hot, improving to 3-0 with a win over Salisbury in their last game out. The team has outscored opponents, 8-1, and has been led by sophomore forward Jessica Balnis with three goals early this year. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Hinkle has stopped all but one shot, making 12 saves for a .923 save percentage.

Mount St. Joseph, led by fourth-year head coach Leah Todd, has fallen in their two opening games in a pair of shutouts. Shelbi Benzinger, a second team All-Conference selection in 2011, leads the way in goal, making 18 saves so far for the Lions.
