CNU Takes on #16 Va. Wesleyan in Home Opener Tonight at 7pm

Captains look to upset cross-water rival

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University women's soccer team will open up their home field on Wednesday night, when they play host to the 16th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins (2-0). The Captains (1-1) will face the first ranked opponent of the year on Captains Field at 7:00 pm.

CNU is coming off a win over Rutgers-Newark at the Marlins Classic Tournament this weekend, a 3-0 shutout of the Scarlet Raiders in which freshman Elena Currence picked up her first career shutout in goal. She earned USA South Rookie of the Week honors for her performance as the offense dominated by outshooting Rutgers-Newark 33-3.

Senior Dani Gunderson has surged out to a hot start in 2012, scoring two goals and adding an assist in the first two contests this season. Junior Emma O'Reilly and rookie Shaydah Naraghi have also netted goals so far.

The Marlins started the year ranked #20 in the preseason coaches' poll and after starting 2-0 in their season-opening tournament, have leapt up to 16th nationally. The team opened up by outscoring their opponents 7-1 this weekend, getting goals from six different players. Senior All-American Jessica Edelman is leading the way with a goal and two assists, including a game-winning tally over the weekend.
