VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The fifth-ranked Christopher Newport volleyball team picked up its sixth straight victory as the Captains raced past Virginia Wesleyan, 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-20), on Tuesday evening at the Batten Center.
Senior
Bailey Jensen led CNU with 13 kills and eight blocks.
Brooke Moore also fired two aces and chipped in with a team-high 10 digs, while
Christie Fellows had five blocks as well.
With the win, the Captains improved to 14-2 on the season. Virginia Wesleyan, who had won 11 of its previous 12 contests, fell to 13-4 with the setback.
CNU made quick work of the Marlins in the first set as the Captains jumped out to a big lead and never looked back. Jensen and Fellows teamed up on back-to-back blocks, while
Abby Hogge launched two aces as the squad stormed out to a 9-3 advantage. Later, Jensen flashed her offensive skills with two straight kills on the way to a double-digit lead at 14-4.
After that point, the hosts simply could not cut into their deficit.
Alyssa Kidd collected two kills and a pair of assists, while Fellows and Jensen joined forces on another block as CNU took a 21-10 lead. From there, Moore fired an ace, Jensen launched another laser, and
Jessie Kolden finished off the frame with a bullet, which punctuated a 25-12 victory.
With such a successful showing in the first frame, the Captains followed a similar script in the second. Although the team momentarily fell behind, 2-1, CNU pieced together a seven-point roll, which deflated the opposition. Once again, Jensen was at the heart of the rally as the middle blocker fired two kills and stuffed a pair of Marlin attacks on the way to an 8-2 lead.
In the middle of the frame, Jensen added another block and blast before Kolden and Harris joined in the fun with rockets of their own on the way to an 18-10 advantage. Eventually, Moore added another ace before Jensen collected two more kills to help the squad earn set point at 24-16. Although the hosts staved off the inevitable for one rally, Lacy took a pass from
Rachel Conway and drilled home the clincher that secured a 25-17 win.
Trailing by two sets, Virginia Wesleyan fought hard in the third. Although Kolden notched four kills and an ace in the early going, the Marlins kept CNU close and trailed by only one at 11-10. With a fight on their hands, the Captains orchestrated a five-point run that helped put VWC away. Fellows and Jensen each had a kill and block during the rally, which gave the squad a 16-10 lead.
Unfazed, Kala Guy ended the streak with a kill for the Marlins before she tacked on two more later in the set to help Virginia Wesleyan pull back within a pair at 18-16. Refusing to let the hosts come any closer, Kolden posted two blocks and a pair of kills during the span of five rallies on the way to a 22-17 lead.
Three points from victory, CNU benefited from a Marlin miscue before Lacy unloaded two late kills, which capped off the three-set sweep with a 25-20 win in the final frame.
Kolden finished the match with nine kills, while Kidd had 25 assists and nine digs. The senior setter also collected four kills on just six swings. Overall, the Captains finished the match with a .333 hitting percentage and held the Marlins to a .073 mark.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday when the squad heads to Maryville, Tennessee for a USA South Tri-Match. The Captains will kick off the day at noon against Maryville before battling Greensboro at 2 p.m.
