Captains Host Conference Soccer Doubleheader Saturday

CNU takes on Maryville College at 1 & 3

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Both Christopher Newport University soccer teams will be in action on Saturday, as the men and women return home for a conference doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 and 3:00 pm. CNU will take on Maryville College in the home set, and both games will be streamed live on CNUsports.com.

First, the women's team will look to end a four-game losing streak against the Fighting Scots at 1:00 pm. CNU is coming off a heartbreaking double overtime loss on Wednesday to the Salisbury Sea Gulls. The Captains offense has been led by junior Emma O'Reilly (6g) and senior Dani Gunderson (4g, 3a). CNU has been shut out just once this season as the offense continues to cruise averaging over two goals per game.

The Maryville women's squad has played just three games so far this season, starting off 2-1 with a win over LaGrange in conference play. Phoebe Leo has led the way with a pair of goals and one assist for five total points.

On the men's side, CNU will look to continue a strong stretch when they return home off a five-game road trip in which the Captains went 4-0-1. Sophomore Jalon Brown has led the way offensively with four goals and two assists for 10 total points, while senior All-American Sean Moriarty has moved up to the midfield and has chipped in a pair of goals so far. Junior goalkeeper Sean Killion has started all seven games and has locked down opponents defensively to the tune of a 0.93 goals against average.

The Fighting Scots men's team is off to a hot 3-1-1 start this season, including a 1-0 win over LaGrange in its conference opener. The offense has been relatively anemic, but a strong defensive unit has led the way as the Scots have allowed just four goals in five games this season. USA South Defensive Player of the Week Ben Munger has played every minute in goal, making 22 saves for a 84.6% save percentage.

This will be the second all-time meeting between both programs. The CNU women hold the edge, 1-0, and the Maryville men won the only other meeting against CNU in 1997. Head coach Pepe Fernandez coaches both squads, winning more than 250 games with both programs.

Live stats and live video of both contests will be available at CNUsports.com
