WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Christopher Newport University slipped to 2-5 overall today in a physical match against the Catholic University Cardinals (2-4). For the first time this season, the CNU women's soccer team was held off the scoreboard and a late goal gave the home team the edge, 1-0.

The two teams combined for 37 fouls and four cautions in the two halves, but the physical nature did not limit the offensive chances for either side. Catholic outshot CNU, 18-13, overall, but teh Captains held a 9-7 advantage in shots on-goal.

Neither team was able to break through in the first half, as both goalkeepers stepped up early in the contest. Catholic's Lexi Halperin had five saves in the first stanza while CNU's rookie Elena Currence posted four stops.

The stellar defense on both sides continued until the 80th minute of action when the Cardinals finally broke through. Kiersten Gault sent a cross in across the front of the net, knocked home by Lauren Cadott for the eventual gamewinner.

With a one-goal deficit, the CNU offense ratcheted up the pressure for the final 10 minutes. The Captains look three shots in the final stretch, including two more shots on-goal forcing Halperin to come up with the save. Carly Utterback and Annemarie Weaver each pressured the Cardinal keeper in the final 10 minutes.

For the game, seven different CNU players finished with at least one shot on-goal, led by two each from Utterback and Emma O'Reilly. Currence had six saves in goal for the Captains.

CNU will now return home for a three-game homestand this week. The Captains will close out the non-conference side of their schedule against Salisbury on Wednesday at 7:00 pm, followed by a USA South weekend against Maryville (9/22 at 1pm) and Ferrum (9/23 at 1pm).
