GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Junior forward
Emma O'Reilly scored her sixth goal of the season, but Christopher Newport (2-4-0, 0-1-0) dropped the USA South conference opener to Greensboro College on Friday, 3-1. O'Reilly's tally tied the game right after halftime, but the Pride responded with two goals in the second half to pull away from the win.
CNU opened up with the offensive pressure early, including a close call off the foot of sophomore midfielder
Joy Piirto. Piirto drove a hard shot that glanced off the post and away from the unprotected goal as CNU held a 5-1 advantage to open the game.
In the 34th minute of action, though, it was the home team that struck first. Allison Gibson scored off an assist from Melanie Raton to take the first-half lead.
After halftime, O'Reilly wasted little time to tie things up, scoring just two minutes into the frame. The goal was the sixth of the season and 25th of her career.
Less than two minutes later, Greensboro responded to re-take the lead, when Gibson scored her second goal of the match. It proved to be the gamewinner in the 49th minute. Raton added a goal in the 78th minute for the Pride.
CNU outshot the Pride in both halves, including a 9-5 advantage in the second half with six shots on-frame. The Captains put eight shots on-net in the game.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Sunday as they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on Catholic University at 1:00 pm.
