NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team ends their regular season on Saturday as they host top-ranked Salisbury at 1:00pm. The Captains are currently 15-2 and have had one of their most successful seasons in program history.
The Sea Gulls have received all 20 first-place votes in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll for the past three weeks. They are currently 18-0 and lead the nation in scoring margin, win percentage and scoring defense. The Captains are ranked fourth in scoring margin and fifth in scoring offense.
CNU is being led offensively in every category by USA South Player of the Year
Ashton Marshall. Marshall has collected 84 points from 62 goals and 22 assists this season. Adding depth offensively for the Captains is junior
Lauren King with 38 goals and 14 assists and sophomore
Jessica Singer not far behind with 35 goals and eight assists.
Defender
Monica Evans will lead the Captains' defense and currently leads the team in ground balls with 49 and is second on the team with 19 caused turnovers.
Goalkeeper,
Hannah Wilkerson, is sure to see a lot of action on Saturday. She has made 105 saves on the year and has an 8.13 goals against average, good for 18th in the nation.
Salisbury goalkeeper, Ashton Wheatley, boasts a 5.7 goals against average that has earned her the top spot in Division III rankings. She also leads the team with 32 ground balls.
Katie Bollhorst is leading the Sea Gulls in points with 100, mostly due to her impressive 60 assists this season. Lauren Feusahrens leads the team with 56 goals.
This is the final game of the regular season for both teams as the NCAA tournament kicks off on May 9th.
