NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University men's lacrosse team defeated Hampden-Sydney 8-7 in overtime. The two teams battled back and forth the entire game but CNU put away the final goal of the game.
John Glaser scored the game winner three minutes into the first overtime period.
Hampden-Sydney got on the board first after almost eight scoreless minutes in the first period. CNU answered with two goals but the Tigers tied it up before the end of the period. Each team scored a goal in the second period for a 3-3 score at halftime.
Johns Thompson scored four minutes into the second half to put the Captains up by one. But the Tigers netted two quick goals to take the lead. Six minutes later Glaser scored his first of the game followed by a man-up goal by
Billy Crist for a 6-5 Captains lead heading into the last period.
Hampden-Sydney tied the gane with a goal at the 11:53 mark of the fourth period. The teams battled with the tie scored for most of the final quarter.
Gregory Limon scored at 2:55 for a Captains' lead. But Hampden-Sydney scored with 1:29 remaining to send the game into overtime.
The Tigers won the initial faceoff in overtime and maintained possession for the first minute and a half. They got off two shots, one saved by
Andy McGregor and one wide. CNU gained control of the ball and quickly moved down field where Glaser shot and scored his second goal of the day, winning the game for the Captains.
Hampden-Sydney outshot the Captains 41 to 27 and had 21 ground balls to the Captains' 15. The Tigers also dominated in faceoffs winning 14 of 19.
Seven players scored for the Captains in the win.
Ari Elgort led with four ground balls and won five faceoffs.
Teddy Pekalski had a team-high three caused turnovers.
The win snaps a seven game losing streak and improves the Captains to 4-9. Hampden-Sydney drops to 8-6. CNU has two regular season games left. They host Ferrum College on Saturday, April 21, at 1:00pm and Greensboro College the following day at 11:00am.
