CNU Women Beat Haverford in Orlando, 8-1

Captains take all three doubles matches

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team continued to roll at the start of the season, picking up their fourth straight win and first over a regionally ranked opponent. The Captains beat Haverford College (3-3), the 19th ranked team in the Atlantic South, 8-1.

CNU raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play, picking up 8-5 wins at No. 1 & 2 and an 8-3 win at No. 3. Sarah Stafford and Marion Gloor beat Alex Ferrara and Caitlin Gallagher in the top position.

In singles action, Ferrara picked up the lone Haverford win at No. 1 singles before the Captains won the other five matches. Kim Morrissett, Gloor and Jodi Noland each picked up straight set wins at 2-4 to put earn the Captains win. At No. 5, freshman Angela Stallman was stretched to a first-set tiebreak, but pulled out a 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 win.

Melisande Downs rounded out the Captains match, beating Abbey Flynn of Haverford despite dropping the second set. She took a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win at No. 6.

CNU will round out its Orlando Spring Break trip on Thursday, taking on Saginaw Valley State.
