ORLANDO, Fla. -- In the first match of their spring break trip to Orlando, Florida, the Christopher Newport University women's tennis team came out firing, winning an 8-1 match over Bryn Mawr College out of Pennsylvania. CNU swept the doubles matches and took five of six in singles for the big neutral site victory.
The Captains didn't drop a game at No. 2 or No. 3 singles, behind impressive efforts from
Sarah Stafford and
Marion Gloor, respectively. Stafford beat Vivien Chen (6-0, 6-0) and Gloor took care of Eliza Perocchi (6-0, 6-0).
Jodi Noland, at No. 4, and
Melisande Downs, at No. 6, picked up quick wins at singles as well. Noland dropped Jenny Vogel (6-2, 6-0) and Downs beat Rachel Genovese (6-0, 6-3).
Rookie
Angela Stallman picked up the first set over Elizabeth Olecki, 6-4, but dropped the second, 4-6. She bounced back in the tiebreak, winning 10-7 to help CNU go 5-1 in singles.
In doubles play, Stafford and Gloor teamed up for an 8-0 shutout at No. 1, while
Kim Morrissett and Noland picked up an 8-3 win at No. 2. Stallman and Downs defeated Catherine Austin and Zoe Odenwalder, 8-5, at No. 3 to round out the days matches.
CNU will return to the courts on Tuesday, March 6, as they take on Ursinus College at Noon.
