Captains Blow Past Averett in Women's Tennis, 9-0

CNU drops just five games in match

DANVILLE -- Christopher Newport ended a three-match losing streak Saturday by beating USA South conference rival Averett 9-0.

The Captains (9-5, 4-2 USA South) got eight players into the match and had little trouble with the Cougars.

Coach Jenny Nuttycombe rearranged the doubles tandems, and they delivered with a trio of 8-0 pro-set victories to put CNU ahead 3-0.

Saturday's tandems included Marion Gloor and Jodi Noland at No. 2, plus two combinations of former high school teammates: Richmond-area James River High graduates Kim Morrissett and Sarah Stafford at 1 and freshmen Emily Draheim and Angie Menendez from Northern Virginia's Robinson Secondary School at 3.

In singles, the Captains won 72 of the 76 games played, enabling them to finish the match before rain intervened. (That rain prompted a two-day postponement of the CNU men's match at Averett.)

Singles victories came from Stafford, Morrissett, Gloor, Noland, Melisande Downs and Angela Stallman.

CNU will return to competition Sunday with a USA South match at Ferrum.
