NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University men's lacrosse team lost a hard fought battle to York College of Pennsylvania, 12-9.
John Glaser led the Captains with four goals.
After eight minutes of play the Captains scored the first goal of the game from Glaser off a feed from
Rob Koster. York struck next three minutes later to even the score. As the period was coming to a close Glaser netted his second goal for a 2-1 score heading into the second.
The Spartans scored first in the second period to tie the game for the second of five times throughout the contest. At 11:48 Glaser scored his third goal of the game for a 3-2 Captains' lead.
York scored three goals over the next seven minutes to go up by two. But the Captains answered with three quick goals to regain the lead.
Ari Elgort scored at the 4:15 mark and
Aaron Chrzaszcz score back-to-back goals at 3:56 and 3:12.
York snuck in a goal with 44 second left in the period for a 6-6 halftime score.
York controlled the third period, outscoring the Captains 4-1, for a three goal lead heading into the final period.
The lead proved to be too much for the Captains who scored two goals but also allowed two in the fourth period for a 12-9 final score.
The Captains picked up 30 ground balls to the Spartans' 29. Elgort led with 11 and also won 16 of 23 faceoffs.
Koster led with three caused turnovers in addition to his two goals and an assist.
Andy McGregor made an impressive 16 saves keeping the Captains in the game.
CNU drops to 3-6 with the loss and York improves to 6-4.
The Captains host Virginia Wesleyan at 7:00pm on Wednesday, April 4.
