NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University women's tennis team fell to 8-5 overall today, dropping a 7-2 decision to the regionally-ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls. CNU got wins at No. 3 and 4 singles, but Salisbury spoiled the comeback bid by taking the other four singles matches.
In doubles action, Elaina Iosue and Katie Youlios were down 4-1 to the Captains' tandem of
Jodi Noland and
Kim Morrissett, but roared back for an 8-6 victory at No. 2. In the No. 3 match, CNU's
Melisande Downs and
Angela Stallman trailed 7-4 before winning back-to-back games and pulling within 7-6, but Allison Lutz and Victoria Handin won the final game to take an 8-6 victory.
The Captains got their two wins from
Marion Gloor and Noland in singles play. Gloor defeated Roxanne Alban (6-3, 6-1) at No. 3 singles and Noland handled Youlios (6-4, 6-3) at No. 4.
Salisbury was ranked 17th in the region heading into Thursday's matchup while the Captains were 15th. The Sea Gulls improved to 5-6 overall this season. CNU will now hit the road for a four-game swing in conference play. It begins with two matches this weekend at Averett and Ferrum.
