Captains Fall to #13 Roanoke, 16-5

ROANOKE, Va. – The Christopher Newport University men's lacrosse squad dropped a 16-5 game to #13 Roanoke College tonight on the road. Freshman John Thompson scored three goals to lead the Captains.

After a tough first period, falling behind by eight, the Captains bounced back with three good periods. They stayed within two goals of the Maroons in the second and third periods and won the fourth period 2-to-1.

John Thompson scored the first goal for the Captains at the 12:22 mark in the second period and was followed almost two minutes later by his second goal off a pass from John Glaser. The Maroons scored four goals in the period for a 12-2 halftime score.

After two more Roanoke goals in the third period, Thompson scored again for the Captains with the assist going to Billy Crist. The Maroons scored one more for a 15-3 score heading into the final period.  The Captains outscored the Maroons in the fourth with goals form Ryan Duca and Kyle Pasta.

The Maroons were led by Joey Coretti who totaled seven points from six goals and one assist.

Ari Elgort dominated in faceoffs winning 18 of 25 and also picked up 11 ground balls to lead the Captains. Andy McGregor and Mark Hargrove split time in the net for the CNU. McGregor made seven saves and allowed twelve goals while Hargrove had five saves and allowed four goals.

Alex Elliott led the Captains' defense causing four turnovers and picking up two ground balls.

The loss drops the Captains to 3-5 and improves Roanoke to 6-3. CNU returns to action on Saturday at 3:00pm as they host York College (Pa.).
