NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The CNU women's tennis team picked up a pair of wins at No. 3 and 4 singles today, but were unable to stave off the first win in N.C. Wesleyan program history over the Captains. Christopher Newport (8-4, 3-2) saw a 13-match win streak over the conference foe snapped, dropping a 7-2 decision to the Bishops at home.
N.C. Wesleyan swept through doubles action, taking a 3-0 lead headed into singles. Samia Kacher and Kristin Seidel picked up an 8-4 win over CNU's top tandem of
Marion Gloor and
Sarah Stafford, while the Bishops' pairs at No. 2 and 3 won 8-4 and 8-3, respectively.
In singles play, Gloor earned a win at No. 3, dropping Seidel in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Sophomore
Jodi Noland also won at No. 4, beating Michelle Hart in a 7-5, 6-4 final.
The Bishops ran away with the other four singles matches, though, for a final of 7-2.
CNU had opened the series with 13 straight victories dating back to the 1999 season when they met for the first time. N.C. Wesleyan was the last remaining team in the USA South that CNU owned a perfect record against.
The Captains return to action this Thursday, March 29 as they entertain Salisbury University on the CNU Courts with start time set for 3:00 pm. The Sea Gulls are ranked 17th in the Atlantic South Region.
