NEWPORT NEWS -- Christopher Newport's women's tennis team pushed regional rival Washington College but couldn't come up with an upset on a warm Thursday.
The Captains lost 7-2 to the visitors from Chestertown, Md., falling to 4-2. Washington College, ranked seventh in the Atlantic South Region of Division III, improved to 5-0.
CNU took a 1-0 lead on an impressive 8-2 triumph by
Kim Morrissett and
Jodi Noland at No. 2 doubles. But the Shorewomen went ahead with an 8-2 win at No. 1 and an 8-3 triumph at No. 3, winning the pro-set's final six games.
In singles, Washington dominated at several spots, but freshman No. 6 player
Angie Menendez registered a 6-3, 6-0 victory.
Sarah Stafford was the last Captain off the court as temperatures reached the mid-80s -- officially a record for March 15. After numerous long rallies, she fell 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 to regionally ranked Jordan Finnegan.
The Captains will return to competition with an 11 a.m. home match Saturday against USA South opponent Greensboro College.
