Captains Suffer Tough Loss to Randolph-Macon, 11-8

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University men's lacrosse squad fell to Randolph-Macon College 11-8 tonight in a hard fought battle at Captains Field. The loss drops the Captains to 3-3 this season and improves the Yellow Jackets to 5-2.

Randolph-Macon struck first and went up 2-1 in the first period with the Captains' lone goal coming from John Glaser. The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to two with the first goal of the second period. But Glaser scored his second goal of the game followed three minutes later with a goal from Kyle Pasta to even the game at 3-3.

With 1:29 remaning in the half, Rob Koster put away his first goal of the game off a feed from John Thompson. Ari Elgort won the faceoff with Brenden Dwyer picking up the ground ball. Adam Abbate took a quick shot that was saved but bounced off the keeper. Koster quickly snagged the ball and put it in the back of the net to give the Captains a two goal advantage.

Elgort won the following faceoff, picked up the ground ball and tossed it to John Thompson who shot and scored with 50 seconds left in the half to put the Captains up by three.

With the momentum going their way the Captains scored just 30 seconds in the the third period as Billy Crist took advantage of a man-up opportunity to extend the Captains lead to four. But Randolph-Macon answered with three straight goals  to pull within one with 6:13 remaining in the period. The Captains scored one more before the Yellow Jackets ended the period with two more goals to tie the game at eight apiece.

The fourth period belonged to the Yellow Jackets who scored the only three goals of the period to win the game 11-8.

Andy McGregor played a great game in the net for the Captains, collecting 12 saves and allowing 11 goals.

The Captains return to the field on Saturday, March 17, as they host Ithaca College at 11:00am.
