NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team came back from a three point deficit at halftime for a 13-11 win against St. Mary's College of Maryland. Junior
Lauren King led the Captains with three goals.
Sophomore
Ashton Marshall scored the first goal of the game just a minute and a half into play. St. Mary's answered three minutes later, evening the score of the first of four times throughout the contest. After one more Captains goal St. Mary's went on a four-goal run to take a 5-2 lead. Both teams put away two more goals before the end of the half for a 4-7 halftime score in favor of the Seahawks.
The Captains poured on the offense in the second half scoring four unanswered goals to take an 8-7 lead. The Seahawks tied the game off a free position shot at the 17:41 mark. Singer scored her second goal of the game just 30 seconds later to regain the lead.
The two teams traded goals before King scored back to back goals for a 12-9 Captains lead with eight minutes remaining. While the Seahawks were able to score two more goals the Captains held on for a 13-11 win.
The Captains outshot the Seahawks 31 to 25 and had 20 ground balls to St. Mary's 10.
Hannah Wilkerson picked up her first win of the season with seven saves. Singer, Marshall, and
Rachel Tomlinson each scored two goals while four Captains each scored one.
Morgan Smith led the team with four ground balls while Tomlinson had a team-high seven draw controls. Defender
Emily Johnson had three caused turnover while midfielder
Becca Geist had two.
CNU has played the Seahawks seven times in program history with this being the second Captains' victory.
The Captains return to action on Saturday, March 3, in Rocky Mount, N.C. as they take on North Carolina Wesleyan in their first USA South game of the season.
